2014 Pet Hero Award Winner - Friends of Finn, Amanda Hearst
and Georgina Bloomberg
Outstanding Rescue Committee
Little did Amanda Hearst, Founder of Friends of Finn, realize that a visit to an emergency shelter for dogs would change both her life and thousands of dog lives thereafter. Seeing the condition of the dogs that had been brought from a puppy mill in Mississippi was more than she could bear. She solicited the help of her friends whom she knew to be known animal lovers. Georgina Bloomberg, Prince Lorenzo Borghese, Breanna Schultz, Fabiola Beracasa among many others teamed up with her to create Friends of Finn, a next generation committee of The Humane Society of the Unites States (HSUS) dedicated to rescuing the trapped dogs suffering in puppy mill factories. In conjunction with the HSUS, Friends of Finn members rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to travel to emergency shelters to care for the animals rescued from puppy mills.
Georgina is an Equine Welfare Ambassador for the ASPCA, Chair-woman of the Horse Council of the Humane Society of the United States, and a member of the Friends of Finn committee for the Humane Society of the United States, a group dedicated to fighting puppy mills. She is also on the board of the Equestrian AID Foundation, the Hampton Classic Horse Show, the Bloomberg Sisters Foundation, the Bloomberg Family Foundation and is on the board of Trustees of the United States Equestrian Team.
Georgina is an advocate of pet adoption and believes that the United States can adopt its way out of killing. By traveling with the Animal Aid caravans to Liberty County, Georgia, she has committed to changing the course of history for shelter animals with the ONE rural shelter at a time philosophy. Currently she lives with five adopted dogs and one very hungry little adoptable pig: Hugo, Mona, Mabel, Chopper, Stella and Wilbur.
Friends of Finn
Since its inception, Friends of Finn has raised over one million dollars for puppy mill rescue efforts and education and awareness campaigns. The committee has also worked with the HSUS to raise money through the annual “To the Rescue!” benefit. Amanda is dedicated to changing the lives of the animals that are in need of safe havens so that they all may find a loving home like her dog Finnegan!
The Pet Philanthropy Circle admires the dedication and conviction of Friends of Finn and honors them with this year’s “Outstanding Rescue Committee” Pet Hero Award.
